Is it Is it possible to be make money online and not sell out?
To put it on other words, is it possible to do so without selling your soul?
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that yes, you can and not have others think you lost your way.
What do I mean by that? For one, there is a huge debate amongst the online marketing community (mostly bloggers) that you can’t blog about your own personal stories or that once you want to make online, you have to do some boring crap, devoid of all personality in the name of selling.
What Bloggers Have Wrong
We all know it’s possible to make money doing something you love or in a way that’s not sleazy. On the surface level, we say this all the time. However, many of us deep down don’t believe it.
Whether we’ve been in a soul sucking job for a long time, or we’re struggling with getting a side business off the ground, we probably believe that at some point we can’t make money and have fun.
And so when it comes to something like blogging (or business), we feel that it has to be “work” or else there’s no way in heck we can be successful. As in, getting paid to write about fun things like personal updates on your life can’t be a money maker because, well, it’s fun.
Let me tell you that everyone (and I mean everyone) struggles with this. I know I certainly do. In the very beginning I resisted even trying to learn how to make money online because I couldn’t stand some of the sleazy tactics out there.
So when it comes to people making money online, they throw spaghetti out there. As in look at who is successful and outright emulate or *gasp* copy them.
Here’s the other thing: many online marketers make money selling you products and services and do so by “teaching” you how to make money. So of course they’re going to look like they can teach you to do something so you’ll purchase something from them.
The point I want to make is that when people feel like they can’t make money doing what they love, they resort to get rich quick tactics. They’re so desperate to make more that they’ll do whatever it takes, even if it means copying other people. They’re devoid of any voice (or stop blogging about their personal story) because they don’t know how to do so while still being money minded.
Now I’m certainly not saying that it’s wrong to make money or write how to posts. It’s OK to do something for the money from the very beginning. In fact, there are lots of people who started blogs (or websites) to teach others how to make money online. Besides, if you’re not in the business to make money, it’s really just an expensive hobby isn’t it?
It’s About Providing Value
It’s cheesy but it’s true. The more someone feels what you have to offer is super valuable, the more you’ll be compensated. And shocker – this has NOTHING to do with how much fun you have or how much time you spend on a task or product.
As in, as long as you have integrity about earning money, do whatever the heck you want! For example, I love sharing stories and I’ve been able to make a living off doing just that.
Another example is Carrie Smith from Careful Cents. She has been able to take product reviews and how-to guides and has been in business for years. I totally admire her because she only works with ethical companies and reviews each and every single product/service. I remember she used to recommend a bank and now she doesn’t, which you know means nobody is paying her for recommendations.
The point is that making money without selling your soul is totally possible. You may not make a lot of money quickly compared to resorting to some shady tactics, but it’s totally possible.
How You Can Make Money Online Without Selling Your Soul
As long time readers and coaching clients know, I always recommend looking at your mindset first. Do you believe you can’t have fun while earning lots of money? Do you feel sleazy working online?
Frankly, you gotta look at some of this negative stuff before you can move on. It’s when you bring this stuff to the surface can you deal with it and move on.
One other thing: are you feeling jealous of other people’s “success”? Could this be the very reason why you’re talking about how sleazy some people are or that it’s not possible to make a living online without resorting to boring blog posts.
There is a way to find a balance (because let’s face it, it’s hard to enjoy every single task). You just need to find out what your values are and use that as a springboard to developing your business (or side hustle) plan.
If there’s anything to take away from this, know that you can learn how to make money online without selling your soul. As long as you have the right mindset to earn money (even if it’s just a 9 to 5), then anything is possible.
