If you haven’t already noticed, the motto of this website is “master your mindset, master your money.”
All this to say that when you’re looking to better your financial life, inspiration can comes from all sorts of places. In fact, I’d argue that you don’t always have to read personal finance books to learn a few things about how you handle your money.
Sounds weird, but it’s true. When you’re too scared to budget or even think about your debt, learning about it is probably the last thing on your mind. It might actually be more useful to go through other books on helping you calm your anxiety so that you can look at budgeting or other types of finance books.
Mastering your money mindset involves taking care of yourself, inside and out, so reading at books that help improve every facet of your life will most likely bleed into your financial life.
For example, I was sleep deprived for a number of months after my son was born. I didn’t take time to rest when I could or even find some quiet moments to myself. What ended up happening was that I ate a lot of takeout and wasted money on yoga videos and memberships I didn’t even use. Once I finally got off my butt and read books on helping me establish a better morning/nighttime routine, I stopped eating out and saved all that money as a result.
Below are five books that don’t really have anything to do with money, but can help you with your financial life.
Forgiveness by Iyanla Vanzant
Earlier in the year I found myself angry for no reason and all. I realized that it might be useful to process some of these feelings. Oddly enough, this book appeared in my inbox.
Iyanla teaches you a 21 day process where you forgive everyone and everything, including yourself and even God (that was hard!). You’ll need at least 30 minutes a day (I took 60) to journal, meditate, write out forgiveness statements and go through the forgiveness process.
Forgiveness is something I really encourage people to do (it’s part of my free 5-day course) and helps to release emotions you never thought you had. When you can deal with situations with a clearer head, you’ll find that you’ll be more motivated to take massive action towards whatever it is you desire.
One of the biggest takeaways you get from this book is that forgiveness is constant. Once you let go of the negative energy, shame goes away and you want to take more calculated risks. I personally found that not only did I sleep better, but I was more present with my coaching clients and helped them see more breakthroughs. Coincidence or not, I recommend you try it out and keep an open mind.
This book is an autobiography of a man who grew up poor in the Appalachian mountains. J.D. Vance not only recounts the crazy family life he had (including a dad that left him, a drug addict mom and dealing with surviving on practically no income), but he gives us an insight into what it was like mentally to deal with trying to rise about his situation. What got to me was the admission of guilt he still feels about his past and how he credits the only source of stability he had for helping him rise above his situation.
This book can help give you perspective on what it’s like to struggle, and it definitely helped me be more grateful for the things I do have in my life, including my relatively boring childhood. Being grateful for what you do have helps you get more of it. If you pick up this book, make sure to read his perspective on payday loans, which I know a lot of people (myself included) looked down upon.
The Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life’s Perfection by Michael A. Singer
Michael Singer’s life is so fascinating! He started off as a professor and through an experiment to “surrender” to life (including requests people make), he ended up opening a meditation center, starting a medical company that has earned him more than a few million dollars.
This book is great in that it shows you how if you can get out of your own way, amazing things can happen in your life.
Think about how many times you were offered an opportunity and said no to it, only to regret it later? Or you were too scared to go for it even though it would have helped you earn more money or life the life of your dreams?
Yes, Michael happened to become a billionaire, but the point was all that money helped him live a richer life. I recommend reading this book and see how many of your “preferences” have stopped you from exploring the possibilities of a richer life. His other book, The Untethered Soul, is also another great read.
Change Your Brain, Change Your Life: The Breakthrough Program for Conquering Anxiety, Depression, Obsessiveness, Anger, and Impulsiveness by Daniel G. Amen
Most of my money issues stemmed from some sort of anxiety (apart from low self-esteem issues, but that’s another story). I got this book to see if it could help any of my coaching clients work through some of their anxiety and depression as it related to their finances.
Although very clinical (and in some cases he does recommend medication), many of the exercises really helped. Daniel does a really good job going over most mental challenges, stories about his patients, how he helped them overcome it. He also provides practical and in many cases simple techniques to help calm your brain down. I’ve tried some of these when experiencing the ups and downs of my business and even before having discussions with friends and loved ones.
